Day 44: John Cale: Gideon’s Bible

John Cale – Gideon’s Bible

This was the first John Cale solo record I ever heard back in 2006. I think I had heard a WFMU DJ go on and on about Cale’s solo records. Being a Velvet Underground fan I figured it was a good idea to seek them out. I stayed away from the avant-garde records, as that’s really not my thing. But this, Paris 1919 and Fear are a great mix of melodic, catchy, beautiful British folk-rock whatever. And though his lyrics can be very dry and even incoherent at times, he manages to work in these unbelievably polished hook and catchy choruses that distract from the confusion. Just listen to them.
