Day 134: Van Morrison – Everyone

van

In 1967, Bert Berns produced Van Morrison’s most notable and radio-friendly song, “Brown Eyed Girl.” Rather than feature a song we’ve all heard a million times, I’ve decided to post a song that quite a few of you may have never heard at all. This deep cut from 1970’s Moondance has nothing to do with Bert Berns, but it’s quick, forward rhythmic motion and intermingling of Clavinet and flute present a prime contender against “Brown Eyed Girl” in the ring of Van Morrison classics.

Day 131: Garnet Mimms – I’ll Take Good Care Of You

garnetm

For the next three days I’ll be featuring songs produced by legendary 60s producer Bert Berns. I was originally turned on to him by Ace’s amazing compilation, but this past weekend on WFMU Michael Shelley’s show was devoted to Bern’s work and featured an interview with Joel Selvin, music writer and author of the new Berns bio: ” Here Comes The Night: The Dark Soul of Bert Berns and the Dirty Business of Rhythm and Blues.”

First I’ll start with this epically soulful Garnet Mimms cut.

This is another band I was turned on to by Bob Brainen’s show. Jake started in the Greenwich Village scene with his partner Bunky and in the 7os he recorded a couple of albums with his band, The Family Jewels. The vocals here kind of run in that same lazy, low-tempo stream that has run throughout the last few songs. Creates a great mood.

Songs like this solidify my admiration for the Bee Gees. I feel like a broken record when I try to convince people that the early Bee Gees output is legendary but I will keep at it. This song isn’t a smash hit and it doesn’t reach any great climax but it’s simple melody and seamless songwriting make it a classic.

Singles Going Steady Vol. 2: South Louisiana Saturday Night

lg-cajun-orchestra-1565

For the second installment of Singles Going Steady I present to you a finely groomed assortment of Swamp Pop, Cajun fiddle and zydeco tunes taken straight from the original 45rpm releases, which spun in every other jukebox and radio station in South Louisiana.

A few months ago, I went down to a man’s house in Lake Arthur, LA. Along with a random assortment of water-damaged country records, I was given about one hundred Cajun 45s. Flipping through labels like JIN, Swallow, La Louisiana and Goldband never gets old.

The songs featured here are mostly selections from my Lake Arthur haul but a few are from other collections I’ve inherited. Having these records dropped on me is such a treat, especially at a time when my taste has been crawling back into the 50’s and early R&B. It allows me to discover and share Lousiana’s place in the early stages of Rock & Roll.

Arthur Conley – Let Nothing Separate Us

There are only a handful of music writers that I’ll blindly trust and seek out everything they write about or recommend. One of these people is soul music writer and historian, Dave Godin. I first heard the beautiful deep soul gem on Godin’s compilation Deep Soul Treasures Volume 2, but I had been turned on to the genius of Arthur Conley through this song I featured a while back. Enjoy this classic soul ballad co-written by the Late Great Otis Redding.

Day 122: The Mad Lads – Cry Baby

The Mad Lads – Cry Baby

Always finding it difficult to make a name for themselves among the Stax all-stars like Otis Redding and Carla Thomas, The Mad Lads remain one of the lesser-known treasures of 926 E. McLemore.  Heavily inspired by The Temptations and the doo wop sound, they weren’t on top of the whole crunching soul scene like their peers. However, their version of “Cry Baby,” which I present to you today, has as much of that good ol’ Memphis sound as anyone could ask for.  From the noodling Memphis electric guitar, the weeping chorus and the classic spoken-word verses, in the style of Joe Tex or Solomon Burke, this cut makes it hard to believe The Mad Lads’ career was ultimately out of the spotlight.

Day 120: O.V. Wright – I Was Born All Over

ov

O.V. Wright – I Was Born All Over

“That’s How Strong My Love Is” is arguably one of the best and most frequently covered soul classics. Otis Redding’s rendition, in classic Redding fashion-nearly reconstructed, is what first led me to O.V. Wright. My love for the Otis Redding cover left me with an itch that needed to be scratched. I soon found out that in 1964 songwriter Roosevelt Jamison discovered Wright and they collaborated on their first single, titled “That’s How Strong My Love Is.”

So I quickly listened to a few O.V. Wright songs and was not let down. I think I had been listening to Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding a lot and it was time to branch out. Branching out into deep soul music is such an exciting experience because all you have to do is wait five to ten seconds and -BAM!- your senses are overwhelmed with the most captivating voice you have ever heard. “I Was Born All Over” does that and more. The thick back beat, the piping horn section, the twangy deep-south guitar and the enormous vocals that sing praise and thanks to the love of his life and the journey that brought him to her are what make this a wonderful cut.

Kip Anderson – Without A Woman

“Without a Woman” is an example of Deep Southern Soul at it’s finest. Sung from the point of view of a man who loved and lost, the song escalates from gentle words of wisdom to passionate soulful screaming as if to say “You idiot! Give her what she needs or she will leave your ass!”

Day 118: Eddie Floyd – Big Bird

Eddie Floyd – Big Bird

When Otis Redding’s plane crashed, in early December of 1967, Eddie Floyd was wrapping up his tour of England.  Floyd boarded the plane with hopes to make it back to Atlanta for the funeral service the following day. As the plane was taxiing down the runway the pilot abruptly slammed on the breaks, citing an engine failure that left Floyd stranded in the airport terminal for five hours, during which he wrote this song. “Get on up Big Bird.”

One of the great Northern Soul classics. I didn’t come across this until I heard “Ain’t Nothing You Can Do” on a Kent compilation and hear Mr. Fine Wine spin a few of his early sides on Downtown Soulville. It’s songs like this that allow me to pose the argument that the first few Bee Gees records are as good as any Beatles record.

Day 104: Vashti Bunyan – Diamond Day

Vashti Bunyan – Diamond Day

A charming addition and one of the folk legends. This is probably Vashti’s most popular song but it is just too much of a hypnotizing and addictive folk classic to not include.

Here’s a beautiful song of hope and optimism from Sandy’s first solo album.

Day 102: Karen Dalton – Something On Your Mind

Karen Dalton – Something On Your Mind

This amazing song serves as a pivotal brick in my wall of musical taste. Not only did it introduced me to Light in the Attic Records (who reissued Dalton’s work, among many other under appreciated geniuses of 60s music) but it opened me up to the wonderful music of female folk singers. A young music-loving me was suddenly bombarded with a female musician whose work was on the same level (if not above) as it’s male-dominated neighbors on my record shelf. Dalton’s raspy vocals reminded me of Tom Waits or Dave Van Ronk, the haunted echoey twang reminded me of Fleet Foxes (who I was into at the time and maybe should’ve realized that dues were owed the other way around) and the beautiful violin reminded me of Dylan’s Desire. But the person I have to thank most is director Noah Baumbach, who put this song over the closing credits of his film, Margot at the Wedding, which is where I first heard it.

Day 101: Chris Darrow – Lovers Sleep Abed Tonight

Chris Darrow – Lovers Sleep Abed Tonight

I first heard of Chris Darrow by way of Drag City, which has rarely let me down. They tend to reissue a lot of great late-60s and 70s records. In fact they are the primary reason why I am into Mickey Newbury.

Big Star – I’m In Love With A Girl

Who better to provide the soundtrack to this beautiful 100th day than my favorite band? Do I even need to say this song is the best?
