Bill Fay – Omega Day

I forget what turned me on to Bill Fay all I know is that he’s one of those early 70s folk singer-songwriters that only released two records and they’re both fantastic. You know, reading that last statement reminds me why I got into him.

Bubblerock – Satisfaction

I love The Rolling Stones and if I could milk this kick for the next few months I totally would. However I am going to move on tomorrow. But I want to leave you with a Stones cover for today’s song. British singer/songwriter/producer, Jonathan King’s cover album,”Bubblerock is Here to Stay,” is the source of today’s cut, a countrified cover of the classic Stones song. If you ask me, this version shines a new light on a song that’s been run in the dirt. Well maybe not in the dirt but I know i always skip over the Stones’ version whenever I encounter it.

Kevin Ayers – When Your Parents Go To Sleep

I know I tend to be very hyperbolic but in this case you have to believe me. This song will blow your mind! I have to assume the position I did with the Syd Barrett song and say that I’m not a big Soft Machine fan. Prog-rock or whatever just doesn’t interest me. But Ayers solo work is so grand and genre-hopping that it’s impossible not to enjoy a song here and there. This song has elements rock, soul, funk and jazz and it is just a marvelous piece of work.

I know this early Waits cut is a little sappy and sentimental and it may be downright cheesy at times. But it reminds me so vividly of when I lived in New Orleans. Paul & Linda McCartney – Long Haired Lady

At one time, RAM was my favorite album. I thought it killed every Beatles album except maybe Let It Be. I thought that Paul McCartney had made the weirdest, most beautiful record I had ever heard. And when I first heard this, back in ’05, I felt like it made me ‘ahead’ of the whole Beatles game. I was such an arrogant hipster. The I moved to a bigger city and realized “Oh okay so EVERYONE knows what RAM is.”  Enjoy the song either way. Even though record nerds worship it, RAM is still wildly under-appreciated.

Day 69: Kitty Wells – Delta Dawn

kitty

Kitty Wells – Delta Dawn

I always get upset when someone tells me they like “all music EXCEPT country music.” They just don’t realize that country music isn’t limited to the trash on CMT. Country music is a freakin’ state of mind. And I don’t mean like “Yeehaw summabitch” with beer and trucks and tight jeans. I mean the beauty of years of tradition, work, family and stories of backwoods folklore passed down through generations and churches and fields. Johnny Cash wrote in his book that country music has changed from being music about a way of life to a way of life about music. I think this is definitely true. I find this hard to argue nowadays because I would be taking the side of the necessity of authenticity in music and especially in good, well-written, finely-crafted country music that is coming out today there are elements that will never feel true simply because of the time and place they were created. So the argument always leaves me on the side that would say Gillian Welch or Drive-by Truckers aren’t ‘real’ and country is dead and I don’t want to do that.

So I think what is important to realize, and what I think the artists creating ‘pseudo-country’ are doing is continuing to tip their hats to roots country. The last of the roots was in the late 50’s. Ever since then it’s been singers paying their respects to the roots music, sometimes successfully and sometime tragically. Haggard was doing this. Waylon was doing this. We need this.  We DONT need songs about tight jeans that sound indistinguishable from the loud, obnoxious Carrie Underwood single. But as always when I address this topic I ramble like crazy and probably make no sense. I go off on new country and people who despise new country and I think the key point I am trying to make is that if you are listening to any songs on this site I can sincerely promise you that not only is my admiration for country music the reason why that song is on the site but country music is probably a reason that song got made. Pardon my use of the generic term ‘pseudo-country.’ The great, timeless country that is being created today is no less important than it was when Jerry Jeff Walker came down to Texas from New York to write and sing some of the most heart-felt country ballads around. People have to understand that country isn’t bad unless it’s terrible. If that makes sense.

p.s.- I should also point out that roots country served as an inspiration to so many great soul, blues and gospel singers that it would be sacrilege for me to ignore it’s importance. I can’t tell you how many soul bios I’ve read where they talk about the artist’s early addiction to the Grand Ol’ Opry and The Louisiana Hayride(Yes, Rufus Thomas used to tune in to certain Nashville stations). This song isn’t necessarily ‘roots country’ but it is definitely inspired by the tradition and the beautifully twangy voice of Kitty Wells lent me a whole new appreciation for a song that, in my opinion, Tanya Tucker did an okay job with.

Tanya Tucker – What’s Your Mama’s Name

I know this song gets a little airplay on classic country stations but not enough to keep me from wanting to post it here. This song has this chorus that is so catchy I just can’t get over it. To me, everything about this song is perfect. While I feel like the Roger Miller song’s chorus is awesome, I still think it get’s a little weak during the verses. It slows down a little too much. This Tanya Tucker song goes strong the whole way through, telling this unfolding story that is both simple in the country music fashion, and a little more because it tells the sad story of a drunkard in search of his long lost daughter.

Johnny Adams – Georgia Morning Dew

“Georgia Morning Dew” is a suitable opener for Heart & Soul and I’d venture to say its one of my all-time favorite songs to open a mix with. “Country Funk” played a big part in my musical taste a while back and when I first heard this song the reverb-drenched vocals, nostalgic lyrics, twangy guitar and thick drumline hit all the right spots for me.

Day 65: Cherokee – Funky Business

Cherokee – Funky Business

Honestly, who doesn’t love Country Funk? It’s such an exciting amalgamation of all these great types of music and I love how it is so distinctly Southern and whiskey-drenched. Not long after I started getting into Soul, Country Funk entered the picture. And let’s face it, Country Funk is essentially music made by some of the most Soulful white-boys out there.

Generally a massive Light In The Attic compilation like this would turn me on to this music but this time the aforementioned Light In The Attic had release a Jim Ford reissue about a year before which totally knocked me out and turned me on to the genre.

Day 64: Duane and Gregg Allman – Morning Dew

Duane and Gregg Allman – Morning Dew

This song marks the start of my week of Swamp Rock and Country music. Now I’m not the biggest Allman Brothers fan. In fact, I am not an Allman Brothers fan. But this song and this Souljazz comp introduced be to Swamp Rock and for this I am forever grateful. As a fan of haunting tunes and strong and unique vocals this song comes fresh every rime I spin it.
